Innovation

The main difference with Svend’s Violin and evolving into Svencino is innovation – the latter works with violins exclusively and the other is an entity which aims to bring new ideas, design and improvements to the violin maker.
There is so much still to be discovered and improved on within the world of violin and music. For sure, there are many things that are mostly cast in ‘stone’ in terms of the form and design of the violin but there are just as many things that have ample space for improvement. Each improvement is aimed at making playing easier at the same time as making resonance and harmonic timbre ‘fuller’ for rich tonality.
Identifying the things that can be changed and setting out to improve on them is exactly what Svencino is all about. In our quest to make music more accessible and easier to reach for all who are interested is what we set out to achieve. The combination of what we find at the bench while working on violins and what you are asking for is a perfect recipe for improvement and a great reason to do it.
The things that we have already worked on while innovating are:
Svencino Harmonic Tailpieces – Designed according to the shape the golden Section maps out. So far frequency testing and many favourable reviews have made it a worthwhile endeavour!
Wolf Harmoniser – We imported a Modulator, took it apart, reverse engineered it and made our own version of it fro a fraction of the cost and import hassle. Playing with magnets and discovering some of their added possibilities has been a fun and interesting.
Tools & Machines – At the same time as working on studio improvements (this never stops) we find that tooling is largely prohibitive. For this reason we have and are slowly working on making our own tools for instrument making and repair. Of course the more specialised tools are the ones we are focused on. A recent example is a Multi Axis Bow Cutting Rig which allows us to repair and restore some of the most challenging breaks that turn a highly valuable bow into scrap! Now we are able to slot, graft and insert in such a way that almost no break is irreparable:) Reminded that practice makes perfect!
Cases & Soft Shells – In the past 25 years of working with violins, the one thing that many string musicians need is a good case. Good often translates to expensive! Unfortunately, expensive doesn’t always mean serviceable, hard wearing and all the other ideas that we reserve for our completed production … We are relatively not far from our first range being released – Mixing all the best from European, American and Chinese models and adding South Afri’can ingenuity to fresh design that should out last any musician, while protecting the instrument.
